My design career


When I was young I am fond of drawing, or in other words, just simply sketching, using a pencil to illustrate the world that I have seen. Also my mother sends me to learn professional painting. That maybe is my first step towards design.



When I was young I dream to be a fashion designer, in that way I can design many fantastic dressing and make myself like a princess Barbie. However I change my mind when I am in high school. Because other than graphic or fashion design I think industrial design is more concrete. It is a combination of art and function. Fashion design will make people beautiful and outstanding, however the fashion vary from month to month, so instead of design, I think fashion designer is more like an athlete who always should catch up with the trends. In this case I don’t think I can be a fashion designer since In my view a good design work should be completely perfect and definitely include lots of thinking not only just some fashion elements.



Also in high school, the beautiful and smart product like furniture, light or daily use stuff always attracts me a lot. I am impressive by Simgle products and the IKEA furniture although they are not expensive.



I always think if I am a alien, one day a human gives me two picture of a car in 1960s and 2010s, what will make me distinguish the more progressive one , rather than the technology , the answer will be design. So in my opinion design probably is the most significant reason to change our life better and easier. This fantasy inspires me a lot. If I can take a part in changing life easier and my idea has chance to come true while be using and appreciated by others, I will be proud of what I have done.



A good design product should satisfactory people’s command and make our daily life easier, so a good designer must be a detective in life who can always realise the detail in life and change it better by mind. That is a meaningful work which contributes a lot to everyone. As those reason I chose to learn industrial design at UNSW.



For my future, I have a great interest in furniture design. Because I think in these area also have many to improve, the furniture design should keep up with the technology developing which not only be beautiful but also be functional. For instance, in early 80s the TV stationary can simply be a rectangle wood box, however now a TV stationary should include place to put a DVD player and disks also the shape of it become thinner since the invention of digital TV. Besides nowadays the TV stationary usually have a joint between woods which can make the TV turn around letting people more convenience to watch. I hope one day all the furniture in my home is designed by me.
