project two: upcycling

Rational

My product for project two is a basket, which is made of two kinds of trash one is cable and the other is waste frame. Both of them are generated in large amount every year and most of them did not be properly reuse, for example Karya Sumiden Indonesia (KSI)with a capacity of 410,400 tons a year and PT. Tong Cheng Sandimas (TCS (Transportation Control System) A widely used integrated information system for railroad transportation developed by the Missouri Pacific Railroad Company in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It was later implemented by Union Pacific when the companies merged. ) with a capacity of 3,300 tons per year. So I deciede to use those trash which is relatively easy to obtain and can be continually supplied.

The property of the cable is its tension and water proof as well as easy to knit. While the property of frame is stable and hard to get broken. In order to fully make use of the trash’s original property I decide to make a basket.

I try many ways to constructed the structure of the basket ,finally I decide three method to knit the basket of three different pars in order to make the product well decorated and interesting. The color of the wire is black ,dark gray ,medium gray and light gray, the black is act as the back ground color and the side color is change gradually from light to dark.

The product is whole handmade there is lots of craft work in that.

It can be used as a fruit bowl a candy basket or for general use to put some stuff and put on the tea table.

video reflection: design for life

This TV series is very beneficial for an industrial designer to watch for many reasons. The first is that it gives you a first hand view of the design process. You see this whole process for each of the contestants, from being given the brief to the final presentation. This involves seeing how different designers negotiate their way through this process, and the successes and failures of each contestant. As an industrial designer it is obviously important to have a sound understanding of the design process, so much so that it becomes second nature. It is therefore very beneficial to watch other designers and the processes they use to help you work out what works well and how you could use this yourself.

With the revision of their designs in the fourth episode, the eight competitors returned to Starke with their ideas. Only four people made it through to the next episode, with designs of a childrens posture chair, anti-mugging glove, magnetic dinner set and an aged walking frame. I found this an interesting episode as the designers became very stressed with the pressure of the competition, hindering the quality of the designs that they were producing. Even after a warning from Starke about their lack of performance and laziness, some of the competitors returned with models that reflected no effort or attention to detail whatsoever. Not surprisingly, these were the four people that were eliminated from the competition

All of this can be accomplished by simply changing the physical and aesthetic character of a room. When its flow is blocked by furniture, walls, or doorways, we tend to feel uneasy and become less satisfied with life as a result. Promoting harmony in a home's living area is simple when it is regarded as both a single, unified space and a collection of smaller regions of space. First, stand in the room's main doorway to examine your living room as a whole. Look for and clear away clutter— the rightmost side of the room can inspire stability in close personal relationships, while tidying the leftmost side will increase your prosperity potential. Release stagnant energy by orienting chairs and sofas in a ring, veiling harsh angles with plants or ornamental screens, and using other furniture to break up direct pathways. A fireplace that serves as the focal point of the room stimulates passion and openness, while sculptures absorb negativity.

If the structural design of your living room does not allow you to decorate in accordance with the principles of feng shui, there are steps you can take to ensure that balance is nonetheless maintained. Mirrors, fountains, chimes, crystals, and aquariums all redirect the flow of chi, while also attracting luck, abundance, and peace. Adding warm colors such as pinks and reds to the living room can be curative even when no other changes are feasible. It does not matter how large or small your living room is, nor how fancy or plain. Address the energy needs of the heart of your home, and you will find your home as a whole is soon imbued with a new harmoniousness that manifests itself indelibly in your existence.

Enrichment poster

Product name: Flowing scissors

Designed by: Ke Zhang

Function: kitchen scissors for general cutting and food cutting

Bottle opener

Nuts squeezer

People who may buy it:

This scissors is design for people who enjoy the modern, simple and efficient life style. This scissors is suitable for a modern kitchen, for people from 25 to 35 both man and woman who work in the office like ccountant uni teacher so forth. Their daily life is relatively regular. They like to cook and care about home decoration.

Features and benefits:

This scissors consist of two parts, the ellipse handle and blades, two handles are fitted in one shape and the blades connect each other gradually, which make the scissors looks as a whole.

I construct this shape because I think the scissors should looks flowing, there should not be a visual gap between the handles and blades, and they should match and fit each other.

Also the blade is not straight, it is 20 degree away from vertical. Because people always standing when cutting in kitchen. There is an angle between people’s hand and the stationary, so we can not put hands on the table and cut a straight line because the blade will scratch the table. However if there is a angle , we can do that easy.

The connect parts are two piece of metal fit in each other and when people open the scissors to the maximum angle , the two blade can be separated, so it is easy for cleaning .

Small details, the bottle opener is placed in the downward of the ellipse so it will not hurt people and there is a squeezer between two handle, also inside the handle there is a rubber ring which let people use more force when cutting and won’t feel hurt.

Material

Handle: Plastic (Polyvinyl Chloride or PVC)

Blade: Stainless steel

Inside handle: rubber ring

Objectified

This video showed the manufactoring process of a product in China.
Manufacturing in China has taken the manufacturing industry by force. With low cost labor and world class factories it is a very viable country to consider when thinking of manufacturing your product. Large corporations have taken advantage of this for many years but with the right contacts and infrastructure smaller firms can now also reap the rewards of manufacturing in China.

China is a very appealing country for international manufacturing of all industries, while some countries in the Asian region have found a more niche market. India and Pakistan are more powerful into textiles at this point of time, but still a viable options for global manufacturers.

Although globalization has brought American countries lower wages and lower cost to their manufacturing needs, we have to consider the impact it has to our local economy. More manufacturing needs are being shifted offshore and less manufacturing jobs are being filled on the mainland USA. But when businesses save cost, they can now pass those savings onto their customers in a win-win situation.

manufactoring is a important part in industrial design, it should be efficient and low cost with good quality.

The story of stuff

The story of stuff

This video is very meaningful. It reveals what people have done and the consequence we may suffer.

First the play an important role in the stuff consumption chain, and merchants only have one purpose which is making profit. So they want stuff flows quickly, they want people throw stuff and buy new one.

There is a big problem that the government always say yes to the corporations since they are the main source of the tax,. So the corporations can use the natural resource without any monitoring, which makes a lot of trees have been cut down and waterways been polluted with industrial chemical used . And on the other hand, the government works for a nice GDP performance by encourage the public shopping all the time. They like people always buying new goods and throw away something used. It’s wasting the limited natural resource to maximize people’s unlimited needs.

On the other hand, the corporations always produce more and more products to make the biggest profits. So they usually make different styles, different colours to attract people’s interests with same stuff and bad quality, which can make people renew their goods more frequent than usual. It is unethical to the public. And they also make a wrong direction of public opinion. Now people always pursue on the different style, different design but ignoring how long we can use the goods and how useful they are in live. So people always waste the natural resource by shopping a lot, but they never notice that.

To conclusion, when designing a product we should not only concern the market but also the environment, especially the resource. So we should improve the material and the assemble process in order to reduce the waste. And the quality of the product is also important, especially some big products like cars computers, we should extend their use life in order to save the resources.

Emotional design

Emotional design

The video of emotional design is impressive.

Firstly, different emotion can cause people behave in different way. Like anxiety results in focus while happy leads to positive valence and creative. So a good product should be a pleasant thing, which attracts costumers subconsciously.

Then, fun and beautiful are obviously important components in design, sometimes people buy a product not because it is function, just because it is beautiful and funny. Just like the ping-pong table of MIT or the Philippe starck juicer. Even thought they cannot actually being used, people still wants to possess them. That is called the visceral level of processing, just like people fond of colorful flowers or balance face however do not like noise or bitter. A good example of that is Mini cooper, although this car has lots to improve, they still have a large sales volume. Because the inside design is round and neat, and it is just pleasant and wonderful for controlling. So if a product can meet the visceral level of design, people maybe buy it regards of the shortcoming in use.

The next level is behavioral level, which is all about your feeling in control, just like the Global cutting knife, when using it, people just feel confident and the tool is completely under control. So a successful product should guide people how to use it, just like a flat round handle can cause push while a pipe shape handle cause pull. A good product should indicate people use it in right way subconsciously. For example the tea pot, when the tea is ready, it will stand up, then costumer will know ‘ok I can drink it’. So emotion always results in acting.

The finally level is reflective. It is not control us behavior, but it affects the decision we made. Just like people still wants to buy a hemers wallet even thought they know it is not worth that much money. But the sense of show off just overweights the sense of saving. So when a product is reflective, people will buy it regards of the common values. In other words, the product is not only a stuff, but also means something or has a special significance

So a good product firstly should be pleasant which meets most people’s aesthetic standard then it should function well that completely under user’s control. Finally, it is better to have a meaning that makes people wants to possess it although it has some shortcomings.

Human centred design

Today I saw the video of human centered design and I learn lots of fantastic products. There is a common feature among those works, that is the human centered, in other words, when designing the products, the designer has really deeply thought about what humans needs, how to satisfactory people's command and make their life more convenience.

For instance, the Prada fitting room really inspired me. The designer first thought what people concern when purchase. Most people care about how the clothes look like when putting on, so he design a small portable scanner, if you interested in something, scan it , then all the information and video about the cloth will display in the LCD. Also inside the fitting room there is a magic window, which allows costumer see the back and front at the same time. Moreover, the glass can change between transparent and blurry, so people inside can let their friends see them in the fitting room after dressing instead of going out.

I think the main principle in those successful products is everything based on the human’s need. When designing, the designer not thinks about the beautiful or quality, they just want to create an easy way in every little aspect.

Another principle among those designs is interaction, or we can call it ‘fun theory’---the communication between product and people can attract human and change the way we behave. Just like the information displayer in London Museum, it based on the subway which shows all the feedback and information from the visitor, so everybody can take part in and see everybody else words.

Another wonderful design is Cubeville which just focus on the fun in daily life, for example there are tank and flower in the cube also have lots of entertainment. It will be really comfortable to work in the cube.

To conclusion, human centered design is base on the human needs and has it own personality, which is not only functional but also personal. Besides I think human centered design will be a trend that has a great impact in future design. In the future designer should be more detail concerning about every little thing in order to make people life more convenience and easy.

My design career

My design career

When I was young I am fond of drawing, or in other words, just simply sketching, using a pencil to illustrate the world that I have seen. Also my mother sends me to learn professional painting. That maybe is my first step towards design.

When I was young I dream to be a fashion designer, in that way I can design many fantastic dressing and make myself like a princess Barbie. However I change my mind when I am in high school. Because other than graphic or fashion design I think industrial design is more concrete. It is a combination of art and function. Fashion design will make people beautiful and outstanding, however the fashion vary from month to month, so instead of design, I think fashion designer is more like an athlete who always should catch up with the trends. In this case I don’t think I can be a fashion designer since In my view a good design work should be completely perfect and definitely include lots of thinking not only just some fashion elements.

Also in high school, the beautiful and smart product like furniture, light or daily use stuff always attracts me a lot. I am impressive by Simgle products and the IKEA furniture although they are not expensive.

I always think if I am a alien, one day a human gives me two picture of a car in 1960s and 2010s, what will make me distinguish the more progressive one , rather than the technology , the answer will be design. So in my opinion design probably is the most significant reason to change our life better and easier. This fantasy inspires me a lot. If I can take a part in changing life easier and my idea has chance to come true while be using and appreciated by others, I will be proud of what I have done.

A good design product should satisfactory people’s command and make our daily life easier, so a good designer must be a detective in life who can always realise the detail in life and change it better by mind. That is a meaningful work which contributes a lot to everyone. As those reason I chose to learn industrial design at UNSW.

For my future, I have a great interest in furniture design. Because I think in these area also have many to improve, the furniture design should keep up with the technology developing which not only be beautiful but also be functional. For instance, in early 80s the TV stationary can simply be a rectangle wood box, however now a TV stationary should include place to put a DVD player and disks also the shape of it become thinner since the invention of digital TV. Besides nowadays the TV stationary usually have a joint between woods which can make the TV turn around letting people more convenience to watch. I hope one day all the furniture in my home is designed by me.
