Rational

This product is designed for a household with children it include couple with children and single parent with children. there are 8.5 million family with a resident child in Australia in 2009, and the number climb every year. So there is a large demand for toys, according to a recent research conduct by Kmart, Aussie mum on average buy 42 toys per year, with a average spending of $1100, however those toy are mostly disposal, there are 40 million toy disposal last year and from which 13 million end up in landfill.so that has a great negative impact on the environment.

currently toy library have some limitations:

•Insufficient money for running

        Community based without government funding

•Limit Trading hour

•Inconvenience location and hard to be noticed

•Some of them members have to be volunteer.

•Require at least two stuff one day.

although it have some benefits such as socialization and cheap, majority of people are not willing to come often because the short comes.

The new system have the following feature:

•Inside shopping centre, easy to find, enough parking, parent can borrow toy when going shopping

•Self-service, parents borrow and return toy not limited by trading hour.

•Parents can trade in toy and get credit which can reduce the amount of disposal toy.

•Parents do not have to sign up roster.

•Parents pay money depend on how may toy they borrowed, more flexible.

This system act as a chain business people can borrow one toy from the locker and return it to another locker in another shopping center.

The process of borrowing is that customer can borrow toy using membership card. Choose toy, and enter the locker number, the description of toy will appear.

 Swipe membership card to conform orderand pay. The card have a prepay credit, customer pay depend on how many toy they borrowed. then locker door will open automatically, cusomer take the toy and close the door.

the process of borrowing large toy is that customer choose toy over the control panel and order, the machine will print out a reciept , customer take the reciept, go to underground storage to pick up the toy.

. The new system is designed for toy semi self-service toy sharing itprovide box package toy as well as large toy. it contribute to people’s daily life as well as the environment.

Video review- Who kill the electric car

At beginning the electric car is popular among people, however it is being replace quickly by the gas and petrol car, because the cheap fuel and mass production. beside the efficient and fast, the petrol car brings the pollution, such as smog in LA, children can not play outside.
In a sustainable development view, the electric car need to be development, because it is enviromrny-friendly , it use solar energy.and dosen't emit carbon-dioxide.
In 21century, designer not only design product for function, but also for sustainable, if is not, that will soon being replace.

When more people start to concern about we have damage the earth and start to take actions in help making up these issues, some business man would do the opposite just to prevent their own business from falling.so when the electric car was brought in to solve the issue of fuel assumption, the large amount of fossil fuel being used. As such product if gets popular, there would be a big change in the economy and the profits of government and oil industries. Therefore these oil industry companies try their best to eliminate possibilities of causing a fall in profit and in this case the drop of fuel assumption will cause a big reduction in their profit. In that way maybe those company can make money in a time duration, but  finally it will suffer human themselves.

 

The video told us when design a product, designer need to take the society in to cosideration because the product they design will be used by large amount of people, if it damge to the environment, that is not a small issue.

From the disassembly we notice the electronic parts are the most hard to recycle and for easy recycle the whole body has better made of the same material.

The 11 hour reflection

The video starts by drawing attention to the fact that so many factors of Earth are polluted, the Earth and human affect each other. The Earth gives us the resources we need to create prosperity and abundance,so the sustainable development is critical. What impact human made on the Earth  one day comes back to affect us by  global warming, natural disasters, changing weather patterns, and so on. So notice that early and change the behavior early will finally protect ourselves.

Human has reached a point where our consumption and level of destruction to the earth are far more exceeded the earth’s ability to replenish and regrow. Our natural planet is not any more has the ability to compensate for our  lifestyle. Evidence and data are presented in the documentary.  From this documentary we need to know the earth’s resources are limited, if we take too much or distribute the nature resource, the results such as global warming will come and finally human suffer themselves.


As a designer, we need to take that into account and make the earth a sustainable future, by the way of .clean energy(solar or alcohol). We must not be selfish anymore and start thinking about the next generations.  In the video Leonardo states “greatest challenge of our time” and we must take action as soon as possible. is the main reason why the earth’s population is shooting at an exponential rate. The petrol and coal are limited, so it will be used up one day, however the population grow every year, increased human require more and more nature resource. so we much find a way to make the development sustainable. For us  the most important thing is to design the product that can lower the consumption of human. 


 Industrial designer in particular need to understand that because industrial designer are people who design and produce daily use product for customer. I think designers are not only designing beautiful products but also need to consider the usage and consumption of materials, energy and environmental impacts. That can be classified  in three stages: production, use of products and the disposal stage. For industrial designer we need to reduce the production by making the product more durable or reduce the material been used and for the disposal process we need to make it reusable or at lease can be most recycle.

CORMARK package design-----Sandwich box

Rationale

 

This product is design for children who age 4 to 11, they need to go to school everyday and the usually need to take some food there.

I first got the inspiration from the straw which can change the shape.

Because children can not finish all the sandwich at one time, if they keep them in the normal sandwich pack, it will make a mass

 

The current sandwhich package has the following feature:

1.Fixed size,one pack of sandwich is always includes two pieces, however child can not finish them one time.Normal sandwich package is not suitable for keeping sandwich because the box is too big and will make a mass.

 

2.One time use, sandwich package is one time use, it can not be reuse.

 

3.Simple graphic, design for sandwich is not attractive to children.

 

And my design have those improvements:

Adjustable thickness,the new package is still can pack two pieces of sandwich, however if child can only finish one piece, they could keep the sandwich in the box for next time, the package can change the thickness.

 

Easy open,the pack is easy to open especially for children.

 

Reusable,when child finish the sandwich, the package can be pressed to be a thin and small piece, it can be reusde for next time.

 

Color,the color of the package is bright and attractive to children.

Video reflection: How it's made + Giving packaging a new life

After watch the video I think the package design industrial have develop to a new stage, it is not as simple as it used to be, it consist of technology d, function and innovation. So when I do packaging design, I need to keep up with the new trends.Over the past decade, packaging has assumed a tremendous amount of responsibility in "advertising" a product. Consumer product goods (CPG) companies like Anheuser-Busch, Coca-Cola, Del Monte, Estée Lauder, and Bacardi have increased both creative and manufacturing efforts to promote the package as the number one marketing vehicle to sell their products.

Recycle technology is inspired me a lot, for example from Tetrapak Video, Using Infrared Detection Unit can identify composite cartons, transferring it by a blast of air! As well as plastic recycling, where optical sorting system that can identify the manufacturing process of the plastic and sort it appropriately, accurately and reliably to achieve efficient recycling. Processes are quick and not needing human intervention anymore, including the label separating and cleaning processs.  It is indeed; “Recycling technology has been made great progress in the last few years”. and  the use of  sophisticated technology make recycle more efficient.

The progress of recycle industrial provide more choice to industrial design, however there are still some material can not being recycle. so when design product, research is essential in order to choose the best material.

Packaging is similar to fashion, and consumers are in tune with fashion trends. Like any fashion, the color, shape, and texture of an item changes with consumer tastes and lifestyle preferences. Changes in consumer trends also lead to packaging changes. Everyone in the packaging design industry knows that most packages are constantly groomed and updated to keep the shelf presence of the products new and exciting. From the second video,  speed of production is really high. These machines operated with no  human except one monitor .It’s very interesting to see that during the manufacture process such as making corrugated cardboard, glass bottles, metal containers and can were mostly machine operated and did not require  human contact. it was done by machine from pressing, steaming, stacking, perforating, scoring, colouring, gluing to folding. Those process make the package more quick and standard, every product and be exactly identical.

So product design need to be more complete and avilable to the product line. and moreover one think important to me is I found glass bottle which can be recycled endlessly and it cost less energy than using metal and plastics.
